Souvignier Gris
The Grape Variety of the Future?
Souvignier Gris is one of a new generation of grape varieties intended to make viticulture more sustainable. Nevertheless, for us, it's not about cultivating a grape variety just because it's modern.
For us, the decisive question is always the same:
Does it produce a wine that we ourselves enjoy drinking?
With Souvignier Gris, the answer is unequivocally: Yes.
What is Souvignier Gris?
Souvignier Gris is a so-called PIWI grape variety. PIWI stands for fungus-resistant grape varieties. They were bred to be significantly more robust against diseases than many classic grape varieties.
This allows for a reduction in plant protection measures and more sustainable vineyard management.
However, for us, this is not an end in itself. Sustainability only makes sense if the quality in the glass is convincing in the end.
What does Souvignier Gris taste like?
Those who have never tried this grape variety are often surprised.
In its style, Souvignier Gris is sometimes reminiscent of a Pinot Gris, but often appears a little fresher and livelier. Depending on the vintage, aromas of ripe yellow fruits, pineapple, grapefruit, and citrus fruits emerge.
The wine remains harmonious, accessible, and pleasant to drink.
Especially people who appreciate fruity white wines with moderate acidity often discover a new favorite in Souvignier Gris.
Souvignier Gris on the Moselle
Our vineyards are located on the steep slate slopes around Detzem on the Moselle.
Here, modern grape varieties meet a site rich in tradition. The cool nights, long ripening periods, and slate soils give the wine freshness, structure, and a sense of origin.
This results not in just any PIWI wine, but in a Moselle wine with its own character.
Sustainability and quality go hand in hand
In viticulture, we are facing new challenges. Extreme weather, diseases, and increasing demands for a sustainable approach to nature are shaping the future of many wine regions.
Souvignier Gris demonstrates that sustainability and enjoyment do not have to be contradictory.
The grape variety enables more resource-efficient viticulture while producing wines that are enjoyable and have character.
It is precisely this combination that we find exciting.
